Peppermint tea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion (a tisane) made by steeping the dried — or sometimes fresh — leaves of peppermint, Mentha x piperita, in hot water. Despite the name it contains no true tea: it is not made from Camellia sinensis but from a leafy herb of the mint family, so it carries no caffeine at all. The brew is pale gold to faintly green and clear, with a clean, intensely cooling menthol aroma, a sweetish herbal taste and a fresh, almost minty-chill finish that lingers in the nose and mouth. It is drunk the world over as a soothing after-dinner cup, traditionally taken to settle the stomach and aid digestion, and is one of the most popular herbal teas alongside chamomile.
