The Seckel is the smallest pear commonly grown in America and one of the sweetest of all pears — a tiny, dumpy, almost ball-shaped little fruit, usually no bigger than a golf ball or a small egg, with a dusky olive-green to bronze ground that flushes a deep maroon and rich russet-brown over the cheek that faces the sun. Often nicknamed the sugar pear or candy pear, it has firm, very fine-grained, juicy flesh that is intensely honey-sweet with a warm spicy note, and it is small enough and pretty enough to be eaten whole out of hand or poached intact as a single decorative serving.
