The Rocha is Portugal's national pear and its only protected-origin variety — a short, rounded, almost squat fruit with a smooth greenish-yellow skin that carries a distinctive collar of warm brown russet around the stalk and a light freckling of lenticels over the body. The flesh is white, fine-grained, sweet and crisply juicy, and the variety keeps so exceptionally well that it is stored and shipped through much of the year, making it the workhorse and the pride of the Oeste orchards north of Lisbon.
