The Asian pear — nashi, or apple pear — breaks the pear mould: round and apple-shaped rather than teardrop, wrapped in golden-brown russeted (or yellow-green) skin, and eaten firm. Its white flesh is crisp, dripping with juice and faintly granular, with a clean, refreshing sweetness rather than the buttery, melting flesh of a European pear.
