Oaxaca Old Fashioned

The Oaxaca Old Fashioned is a modern-classic agave-spirit reinvention of the Old Fashioned — reposado tequila and a splash of smoky mezcal, sweetened with a touch of agave nectar and pointed up with a couple of dashes of bitters, stirred over a large ice cube in a rocks glass and finished with a flamed orange twist. Deep amber and spirit-forward, it swaps the whiskey of a traditional Old Fashioned for Mexico's agave spirits, giving a smoky, earthy, faintly sweet sipping drink.

Deep amber, the Oaxaca Old Fashioned opens with a curl of mezcal smoke and the earthy, mineral scent of roasted agave, lifted by the bright oils of a flamed orange twist and underpinned by oak and vanilla from the reposado tequila. On the palate it is spirit-forward and dry — a faint agave-nectar sweetness and a touch of vanilla-caramel roundness set against savory smoke, cooked-agave earthiness and a gentle bitters spice — finishing long, warm and smoky at around 32 percent alcohol in the glass.
