Nance is the small, round, golden-yellow drupe of Byrsonima crassifolia, a hardy tropical tree of the savannas and dry forests of Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. Roughly the size of a cherry, it has a soft, oily, white flesh whose flavour is famously divisive — a cheesy, fermented sweetness that some adore and others find pungent.
