Mors

Mors is a traditional Russian and East-Slavic berry drink made by crushing tart wild berries — classically lingonberry or cranberry — and combining their juice with water and a sweetener of sugar or honey. The result is a cool, deeply ruby-red, sweet-and-sour beverage, non-alcoholic and refreshing, that has been a fixture of the Russian household for centuries. It is one of the oldest documented Slavic soft drinks, named in the sixteenth-century household manual Domostroy. Tart, vivid and only lightly sweet, it is served chilled in summer and warm in winter.

A cold glass of cranberry or lingonberry mors leads with bright, sharp berry — vivid and frankly sour — over a light, watery body lifted by just enough sugar to round the edge; there is a faint floral, almost wild-fruit sweetness and a clean, thirst-quenching finish, far more tart and dilute than a juice or cordial.
