Caffè mocha

A caffè mocha, or mocha latte, is an espresso-and-milk drink sweetened and flavoured with chocolate. A shot or two of espresso is combined with chocolate syrup or cocoa powder and topped up with steamed milk, then usually finished with a crown of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa or chocolate shavings. Essentially a latte crossed with hot chocolate, it is richer, sweeter and more dessert-like than a plain latte, balancing the bitterness of coffee and dark chocolate against milk and sugar. The name traces, through coffee history, to the Yemeni port of Mocha (Mokha) on the Red Sea.

A mocha reads first as warm chocolate and roasted coffee wrapped in steamed milk: bittersweet cocoa and espresso meet a creamy, milky sweetness, with caramel and malt rounding out the cup. The added chocolate and sugar tame the coffee's bitterness while the milk gives a soft, full body, so it drinks sweeter, richer and more dessert-like than a plain latte, finishing on lingering bittersweet chocolate and a faint whipped-cream richness if topped.
