Misugaru is a Korean drink made from misutgaru, a fine powder of assorted grains and beans that have been steamed or soaked, roasted, and milled — typically some blend of barley, brown and glutinous rice, soybean, black soybean, black sesame, adzuki bean, corn and Job's tears. Two or three spoonfuls are stirred into cold milk or water, sweetened with a little sugar or honey, and drunk as a quick, nutty, filling breakfast or a cooling summer refreshment. The powder is fully cooked in the roasting, so no heating is needed at the table; the result is a smooth grain shake with the toasty depth of a cereal and the body of a light porridge. It is non-alcoholic and, when mixed with water rather than milk, naturally dairy-free.
