Milk tea is the broad family of drinks made by combining brewed tea — most often black tea — with milk, and usually sugar, to yield a soft tan-brown liquor that is smoother, rounder and less astringent than tea taken plain. It is one of the most widely drunk beverages on earth, spanning the everyday cup of British tea-with-milk, the spiced Indian masala chai, and the sweet iced boba and Hong Kong styles of East Asia.
