Midori is a sweet, luminous neon-green Japanese liqueur flavoured with honeydew and muskmelon, made by the Suntory drinks house of Osaka. Its name is simply the Japanese word for "green," and its signature is candied-melon sweetness — the taste of ripe honeydew and cantaloupe turned into syrup. Bottled at a gentle 20–21% alcohol by volume, it is built on a neutral spirit sweetened and aromatised with melon and finished with vivid green colouring. Rarely drunk neat, it is above all a mixing and colour ingredient, lending its glowing green hue and fruit-candy flavour to sours and tiki-style drinks. It is best known in the Midori Sour and the Japanese Slipper, and became a nightclub icon after its splashy 1978 launch at New York's Studio 54.
