Mexican Firing Squad
The Mexican Firing Squad is a 1930s Mexico City classic — tequila brightened with fresh lime, sweetened and coloured with grenadine and lifted by a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters, shaken and served over ice. Rosy-pink and tart, it is essentially a tequila sour with a bittered, pomegranate edge, one of the earliest tequila cocktails to be recorded outside Mexico.

Rosy-pink in the glass, the Mexican Firing Squad smells of sharp fresh lime and sweet pomegranate grenadine over the green, vegetal snap of blue-agave tequila, with a warm thread of Angostura baking spice rising through it. On the palate it is tart and fruit-forward — bright lime acidity set against pomegranate-sweet grenadine — with the tequila's earthy agave underneath and a spiced, faintly bitter clove-and-cinnamon finish from the Angostura. It is softer and more refreshing than a Margarita at around 18 percent alcohol in the glass, a tequila sour with a bittered, rosy edge.
