Spirit
Metaxa
Metaxa is the iconic Greek spirit — a smooth, amber-gold blend of aged wine distillates married with sweet Muscat wine and a secret bouquet of Mediterranean botanicals, softer and rounder than a straight brandy, with notes of dried fig, raisin, honey, orange peel and warm spice, graded by stars for the number of years it has aged and sipped neat, over ice or in long drinks as Greece's most famous after-dinner spirit.

Faintly sweet, silky and warming, Metaxa leads with dried fig, raisin and honeyed grape from its aged distillates and blended Muscat wine, over candied orange peel, a floral rose-and-herb perfume from the secret botanicals, and warm baking spice — cinnamon and clove — laid over a mellow, vanilla-and-oak base. The texture is rounder and gentler than a straight brandy thanks to the added wine, with a soft alcohol warmth at around 38 to 40 percent, and the finish is long, sweetish and spiced, growing smoother and more complex in the older 12 Stars and Private Reserve bottlings.
