A caffè marocchino is a small Italian coffee drink built from a shot of espresso, a dusting of cocoa powder and a little milk foam, layered together in a small glass. Originating in Piedmont in north-west Italy, it is a short, dessert-like cousin of the cappuccino, closer in size to a macchiato than to a milky latte. The cocoa is the defining touch: it is usually dusted into the glass before or after the espresso and again over the foam, so the drink reads as espresso and chocolate softened by a thin cap of milk. Served in a small, often glass, cup that shows off its layers, a marocchino is richer and more chocolatey than a plain macchiato but far smaller and stronger than a mocha.
