Maltitol is a sugar alcohol (polyol) about 75–90% as sweet as table sugar but with roughly half the calories. It is the bulk sweetener that behaves most like sugar — it dissolves, adds body and mouthfeel, and works in chocolate, baked goods and sugar-free candy with little of the cooling aftertaste of other polyols. The catch is that, like all polyols, it is a laxative in quantity.
