The Long Island Iced Tea is a tall, strong mixed drink built from four white spirits at once — vodka, gin, white rum and silver tequila — with orange liqueur, lemon and a splash of cola over ice. It contains no tea at all: the name comes only from its colour, a deep amber that makes a full glass look convincingly like sweetened iced tea. Despite that innocent appearance it is one of the most potent of the popular mixed drinks, carrying five spirits in a single highball, and it became a notorious party and happy-hour staple from the 1970s onward. The classic build is tart-sweet and cola-tinged, easy to drink and deceptively boozy.
