Leap Year
The Leap Year is a gin-based classic created by Harry Craddock at the Savoy Hotel for the leap-year celebration of 29 February 1928 — gin lengthened with orange Grand Marnier and sweet red vermouth, sharpened with a dash of fresh lemon, stirred and strained up into a coupe with a lemon twist. Pale gold and aromatic, it is a smooth, orange-scented Martini cousin from the golden age of the London hotel bar.

Pale gold in the coupe, the Leap Year smells of candied sweet orange and warm cognac from the Grand Marnier, laid over the dry pine and juniper of gin, with a herbal, faintly wine-like lift from the sweet vermouth and a bright squeeze of fresh lemon on top. On the palate it is smooth and rounded — a gentle candied-orange sweetness and herbal richness from the liqueur and vermouth, balanced by the tart dash of lemon and the dry backbone of the gin — finishing clean, aromatic and faintly bitter-orange at around 28 percent alcohol in the glass.
