Caffè latte

A caffè latte is a milky coffee drink built from a shot of espresso and a large volume of steamed milk, finished with only a thin layer of microfoam. The name is Italian for "milk coffee", and the proportions are heavily weighted toward dairy: roughly one part espresso to three to five parts milk, so the cup reads as mild, creamy and gently sweet rather than sharply bitter. It is the lightest-tasting and most milk-forward of the standard espresso-and-milk drinks, sitting alongside the cappuccino, flat white and cortado, and is the canvas for sweetened and flavoured variations from the vanilla latte to the pumpkin spice latte.

A latte reads first as warm steamed milk — creamy, lightly sweet and buttery from the dairy fat and lactose — carrying a softened wave of roasted coffee underneath. The large milk volume mutes the espresso's bitterness, acidity and smoky intensity into a mild, mellow, gently caramel-and-cocoa coffee flavour, with a smooth, full body from the milk and only a thin, silky layer of microfoam on top rather than a thick foam cap.
