Lactitol is a sugar alcohol (polyol) made from milk sugar, used as a reduced-calorie bulk sweetener. It is only about 30–40% as sweet as table sugar with a clean, mild taste and almost none of the cooling sensation of other polyols, which makes it a favourite bulking agent in sugar-free chocolate and baked goods — and, in larger doses, a laxative.
