Keppel fruit

Stelechocarpus burahol · Tropical fruit

The keppel (or kepel) fruit is the round, brown, plum-sized berry of Stelechocarpus burahol, a tropical tree in the custard-apple family (Annonaceae) native to the rainforests of Malesia and cultivated almost exclusively in Java. Its juicy orange pulp tastes of mango, papaya and coconut, but the fruit is most famous for an unusual after-effect: eating it is said to perfume the body's sweat, breath and urine with the scent of violets.
