Journalist

The Journalist is a lavishly dressed Savoy-era gin Martini — a base of dry gin seasoned with equal small measures of dry vermouth, sweet vermouth and triple sec, then sharpened with a little fresh lemon juice and two dashes of Angostura bitters. Stirred cold and strained up into a coupe, it is a pale-golden, complex and elegant variation on the dry Martini, aromatic and bittersweet rather than austere.

Pale gold in the glass, the Journalist smells of dry pine-and-juniper gin lifted by fresh lemon and a whisper of sweet orange, over the herbal, faintly wine-like depth of French and Italian vermouth and the warm baking-spice hum of Angostura. On the palate it is dry and spirit-forward at the core — a Martini's crisp juniper backbone — but rounded by bittersweet vermouth and a touch of orange-liqueur sweetness, brightened by a squeeze of lemon and finished with an aromatic clove-and-cinnamon bitterness. It runs around 26 percent alcohol in the glass and drinks clean, silky and long.
