Jagermeister

Jagermeister is a German herbal liqueur (Krauterlikor) made from a maceration of 56 herbs, fruits, roots and spices in alcohol and water, bottled at 35 percent alcohol by volume. Dark reddish-brown, sweet, bitter and aromatic, it has been produced in the Lower Saxony town of Wolfenbuttel since 1934 and is traditionally drunk ice-cold as a digestif.

Thick and syrupy, sweet up front with caramel and baking spice (clove, cinnamon, star anise), opening into a complex herbal-bitter middle — liquorice, anise, citrus peel and ginger — and finishing cooling, rooty and gently bitter with a warming alcoholic lift. Served ice-cold the sweetness and bitterness both tighten into a cleaner, more medicinal-herbal shot.
