The Jack Rose is an American classic of the sour family, built from applejack — apple brandy — fresh lemon or lime juice and grenadine, shaken hard and strained ice-cold into a stemmed cocktail glass. It is a clean, autumnal drink — rosy pink, tart and lightly sweet, with the warm orchard-fruit character of apple brandy at its core — and one of the defining cocktails of the early twentieth century and the Prohibition era. Its colour and its name both come from the same place: the rosy red of the grenadine over the apple spirit. Once one of the most famous cocktails in America, it faded from fashion mid-century and has been revived by the craft-cocktail movement.
