The Indian jujube or ber (Ziziphus mauritiana), also called Chinee apple, dunks or masau, is the small tropical drupe of a thorny tree in the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). Round to oval and roughly cherry- to plum-sized, it ripens from glossy green through yellow to reddish-brown, with crisp, apple-like white flesh that is sweet-tart and mildly astringent. A staple of South Asian orchards and roadsides, it is eaten fresh, sun-dried, candied and pickled — a warm-climate cousin of the temperate Chinese jujube, larger and adapted to the tropics.
