The Hurricane is a New Orleans rum cocktail — a tall, fruity, ruby-red drink of rum, passion-fruit syrup and fresh lemon juice, shaken and poured over crushed ice into the curved, lamp-shaped glass that gives it its name. It is sweet, tart and tropical, deceptively easy to drink for the amount of rum it carries, and the signature pour of Pat O'Brien's bar in the French Quarter. Born in the 1940s as a way to use up an excess of rum, it became one of the emblematic drinks of New Orleans and of the wider tiki and exotic-cocktail revival.
