Hugo Spritz

The Hugo Spritz is a light, floral Italian-Alpine aperitivo — prosecco lengthened with elderflower syrup or liqueur, topped with soda water and built over ice in a big wine glass with a generous bunch of fresh mint and a wedge of lime. Pale, gently sparkling and barely sweet, it is the softer, more perfumed alternative to the orange-bitter Aperol Spritz, made to sip in the sun.

Pale straw-gold and softly sparkling, the Hugo smells of honeyed elderflower — muscat grape and a lychee-like flower note — lifted by crisp prosecco fizz, bruised fresh mint and bright lime zest. On the palate it is light and floral, gently sweet from the elderflower and balanced by the wine's green-apple acidity and the citrus bite of lime, with a cooling minty freshness running through it. It finishes clean, dry and effervescent at only around 8 percent alcohol in the glass — perfumed and easy, the softer, prettier cousin of the bitter-orange spritz.
