"Huckleberry" is the common name for a cluster of small, round, dark wild berries native to North America, borne on shrubs of the genus Vaccinium (the western or "true" huckleberries, especially the black mountain huckleberry, Vaccinium membranaceum) and the genus Gaylussacia (the eastern huckleberries). Deeper, winier and more intense than a blueberry, the western huckleberry remains almost entirely wild-harvested and is prized in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies for pies, jam, syrup and ice cream.
