Hot chocolate is a warm drink made by whisking cocoa powder or melted chocolate into hot milk or water with sugar, into a rich, sweet, comforting cup. The thick European style known as chocolate caliente or cioccolata calda, built from melted chocolate and its cocoa butter, is dense enough to coat a spoon; the lighter cocoa-powder style drunk across much of the world is thinner and milkier. Both descend from xocolatl, the bitter, spiced, sugarless cacao drink of the Maya and Aztec.
