The heartnut is the smooth, heart-shaped nut of a cultivated form of the Japanese walnut (Juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis) — a sweet, mild, butter-soft tree nut whose great virtue is that its two-lobed kernel slips out of the cracked shell whole, in one clean heart-shaped piece, unlike the fiddly broken halves of a common walnut.
