Guaraná soda

Guaraná soda is a sweet, lightly caffeinated carbonated soft drink flavoured with the seed of the guaraná berry, an Amazonian climbing plant. Pale straw-gold and gently fizzy, it is the national soft drink of Brazil, where guaraná outsells even cola in some years, and it has become one of the defining sodas of Latin America. Its flavour is difficult to pin down — often described as a soft, fruity blend of green apple, berry and bubblegum with a faint tannic edge — and it is non-alcoholic, sugary and mildly stimulating, drunk ice-cold across Brazil and the wider region.

A cold guaraná soda reads first as a soft, sweet, fruity wash — green apple and red berry with a distinct bubblegum or pear-drop lift that is hard to pin to any single fruit — carried on a light, sugary body with a soft citric tang and a faint tannic edge from the guaraná seed. The taste is frankly sweet, gently tart and only mildly bitter, all lifted by clean carbonation; the pale golden colour and light stimulant kick set it apart from the darker, spicier colas it competes with.
