Grand Marnier

Grand Marnier is a French orange-flavoured liqueur built on a base of Cognac rather than neutral spirit — a blend of aged Cognac brandy and the distilled essence of bitter Citrus bigaradia orange peel, sweetened and bottled at around 40 percent alcohol by volume. Its richness and brandy backbone set it apart from the lighter, neutral-spirit triple secs like Cointreau.

Rich, sweet and viscous, Grand Marnier leads with a bright candied-orange and zesty bitter-peel aroma layered over the warm, woody, slightly tannic character of aged Cognac, with caramel, vanilla and a touch of spice from the oak. The texture is full and rounded, the alcohol noticeable at about 40 percent ABV, and the finish is long — sweet orange giving way to a faintly bitter, brandy-and-oak warmth.
