Goldschläger leads with an intense hot-cinnamon aroma — cassia bark and red-hots candy — over a clean, water-clear high-proof spirit. On the palate it is only moderately sweet for a liqueur, so the candied-cinnamon flavour arrives quickly and is chased by a real spirituous burn from the 43.5 percent alcohol and a prickling, almost peppery cinnamon heat that lingers warm in the throat. The texture is thin and clear rather than syrupy, the finish long, hot and drying, faintly woody from the cassia; the flecks of gold leaf drift through but add nothing to taste, pure spectacle in the glass.
