Gin Basil Smash
The Gin Basil Smash is a modern classic — gin shaken hard with fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and a handful of fresh basil, then strained over crushed ice in a rocks glass and garnished with a basil sprig. Brilliant green and vividly herbaceous, it is essentially a gin sour perfumed with basil, tart and refreshing with a bright, leafy aroma that rises out of the glass.

Vivid jewel-green in the glass, the Gin Basil Smash smells overwhelmingly of fresh basil — sweet, peppery and faintly aniseed — lifted by bright lemon zest and underpinned by the dry pine and citrus-peel of gin. On the palate it is a crisp, tart gin sour: brisk lemon acidity, just enough syrup to round it, and the leafy, herbaceous perfume of bruised basil carrying through from nose to finish. A gentle juniper pungency and a clean, dry herbal close follow at around 20 percent alcohol in the glass, leaving the mouth fresh and green.
