Gimlet

The Gimlet is the classic gin-and-lime cocktail — at its most traditional just gin and sweetened lime cordial, stirred or shaken with ice and served up in a chilled coupe. Clean, dry and bracingly citrus, it is one of the simplest drinks in the canon, a two-ingredient balance of juniper-led gin against the sharp, candied tang of preserved lime, with deep roots in the British Royal Navy and its long campaign against scurvy.

The Gimlet leads with the sharp, slightly candied tang of preserved lime over a dry, juniper-forward gin base, the cordial's cooked-citrus note setting it apart from a fresh-lime sour. Beneath the lime sit the gin's botanicals — pine and juniper up front, with soft coriander, citrus peel and a faint floral lift — and a clean spirit warmth that runs through the finish. It is short, dry and bracing, the sweetness of the cordial just rounding the citrus snap without making it cloying; the alcohol sits high in the mid-range, present and warming because the drink is spirit-led and lightly diluted.
