Génépy

Génépy is a herbal Alpine liqueur made by macerating wild génépi — high-mountain Artemisia species (relatives of wormwood) that grow above the tree line in the Alps — giving a pale, faintly bitter, intensely herbaceous spirit at around forty percent alcohol that tastes like a rustic, wilder cousin of Chartreuse.

Pale and light in the glass, génépy opens with a rush of green alpine herbs — hay, thyme, sage and a distinct camphoraceous, medicinal lift — over the gentle bitterness of its wormwood-cousin Artemisia. It is only lightly sweet for a liqueur, so the herbal and faintly bitter character dominates, with a warm spirit backbone at around forty percent ABV. The palate is aromatic and drying, the finish long, herbaceous and slightly resinous, tailing off into thyme, honey and mountain-herb bitterness — rustic and wilder than the polished, denser Chartreuse it recalls.
