Galliano is a bright-gold Italian herbal liqueur, sweet and viscous, best known for a vanilla-forward flavour lifted by star anise and a chorus of Mediterranean herbs and spices. It was created in 1896 by the Tuscan distiller Arturo Vaccari in Livorno and named after Giuseppe Galliano, a hero of Italy's first war in Ethiopia, and it is bottled in an instantly recognisable tall, tapering column bottle modelled on a Roman column. Made by macerating and distilling around thirty botanicals — among them star anise, Mediterranean anise, juniper, yarrow, lavender, peppermint, cinnamon and ginger — around a signature vanilla note, it is sweet, warm and aromatic. The flagship expression, Galliano L'Autentico, is bottled at 42.3% ABV, and the liqueur is drunk neat or on ice as a digestivo, in coffee, and above all in cocktails — most famously the Harvey Wallbanger and the Golden Cadillac.
