Furikake (ふりかけ) is a dry Japanese seasoning sprinkled over cooked rice, made from a base of toasted sesame seeds and shredded nori (laver) bound with salt, sugar and savoury flavourings such as dried bonito flakes, dried fish or monosodium glutamate. Salty, nutty and intensely umami, it turns a plain bowl of rice into a quick, flavour-packed meal.
