Cocktail
French Connection
The French Connection is a classic after-dinner cocktail — equal parts cognac and amaretto, built over ice and stirred in a rocks glass. Amber and unmistakably nutty, it is one of the simplest of the recognised classics: a two-ingredient, spirit-forward digestif that pairs the warmth of French brandy with the marzipan sweetness of an Italian almond liqueur.

Warm amber in the glass, the French Connection smells of sweet almond and marzipan from the amaretto layered over the dried-fruit, grape and gentle oak of cognac, with a faint bitter-kernel edge and a whisper of vanilla. On the palate it is rich, rounded and sweet — the marzipan nuttiness of the liqueur wrapping the warming, brandy-forward cognac — with almost no acidity or bitterness to cut it, and a long, soft, nutty-warm finish at around 30 percent alcohol in the glass. Because the two spirits are such close flavour cousins, it drinks as one seamless, cosy, after-dinner whole.
