A frankfurter is a slender, fully cooked and lightly smoked emulsified sausage, made from finely ground pork (often blended with beef), seasoned mildly and packed into a thin casing. Smooth, springy and ready to eat after warming, it is the German ancestor of the American hot dog and the centrepiece of countless quick meals.
