Flat white

A flat white is a milk-based espresso drink built on a shot or double shot of espresso poured under steamed milk and finished with only a thin layer of glossy, fine-textured microfoam. It is served small, usually about one hundred and fifty to one hundred and sixty millilitres, with far less foam than a cappuccino and less milk than a typical latte, so the coffee stays forward and the drink tastes more strongly of espresso while still being smooth and creamy. Its defining feature is the silky integrated milk rather than a thick froth cap, which gives it a flat, velvety surface.

A flat white reads first as smooth steamed milk wrapped around a clearly present espresso; the velvety microfoam and lactose lend a creamy, gently sweet body, while the roasted, bittersweet coffee stays forward because the milk is modest in volume and lightly aerated. It is softer and milkier than a plain shot but noticeably more coffee-driven than a large latte, with caramel, chocolate and malt notes over a faint bright acidity.
