Fig — whole and cut in half

Fig

Ficus carica · Fruit

The fig is the soft, teardrop-shaped fruit of Ficus carica, a small Mediterranean tree of the mulberry family. Thin-skinned in green, brown or deep purple, it splits open to reveal a jammy, honey-sweet, seed-flecked interior. Eaten fresh in late summer or dried into a chewy sweet through the rest of the year, it is one of the oldest cultivated fruits on Earth.
