El Presidente

El Presidente is the sophisticated house cocktail of 1920s Havana — light rum lengthened with dry vermouth, sweetened and coloured with a touch of orange curacao and a dash of grenadine, stirred over ice and strained up into a coupe with an orange twist. Pale amber and elegantly dry, it was the refined drink of the American Bar era, a Cuban answer to the Manhattan built around rum rather than whiskey.

Pale golden with a faint rosy tint, El Presidente smells of clean, lightly grassy cane rum and the herbal, wine-like dryness of vermouth, lifted by expressed orange oil and a whisper of bittersweet curacao. On the palate it is dry and elegant rather than sweet — the light rum runs through a delicate herbal vermouth backbone, the curacao adds a soft bittersweet-orange note, and the barely-there dash of grenadine rounds the edges with a subtle pomegranate blush. It is silky and aromatic, finishing dry and warm at around 28 percent alcohol in the glass, a stirred rum cocktail with the poise of a Manhattan.
