Eastside

The Eastside is a modern-classic gin sour — gin shaken with fresh lime, simple syrup, cucumber and mint, then strained up into a coupe or served over ice. Pale, cloudy green and garden-fresh, it is the cucumber sibling of the older Southside, trading a little of that drink's sharp mintiness for cool, clean cucumber and turning the gin sour into one of the most refreshing drinks of the 2000s craft-cocktail revival.

Pale and faintly cloudy green, the Eastside smells of cool cucumber and fresh-slapped mint lifting off bright lime and the pine-and-juniper aromatics of gin. On the palate it is a clean, well-balanced sour — crisp lime tartness set against gentle simple-syrup sweetness — carried on a watery-green cucumber freshness and an aromatic mint top note, with the gin's dry juniper backbone running underneath. It finishes crisp, herbaceous and refreshing, garden-fresh rather than spirit-heavy, at around 20 percent alcohol in the glass.
