Damiana liqueur is a sweet, aromatic Mexican herbal liqueur flavoured with the leaves of the wild shrub damiana (Turnera diffusa), a plant native to Baja California and the dry scrublands of Mexico and long reputed as a folk aphrodisiac and digestive tonic. Built by macerating the small resinous damiana leaves in a neutral spirit and sweetening the infusion, it is pale golden to light amber, medium-sweet and gently bitter, tasting of warm hay, chamomile and fig with a herbal, faintly medicinal, cola- and-vanilla lift; it is usually bottled around 30% ABV. In Baja California it is famously sold in a squat, rounded bottle shaped like a pregnant woman — a nod to the herb's fertility folklore — and it is best known internationally as the traditional Baja substitute for orange liqueur in a "Baja" or "damiana" margarita, where its herbal sweetness replaces triple sec. Locally it is also drunk neat or over ice as a regional digestif. Compared with a clean citrus liqueur like Cointreau, damiana liqueur is softer, earthier and more botanical, trading bright orange for a mellow, honeyed-herb character.
