The crowberry is the small, glossy black berry of Empetrum nigrum, a low, creeping evergreen dwarf shrub of the heath family that carpets cold, exposed ground across the Arctic, subarctic and northern mountains. Watery and mildly sweet-tart with a faint resinous, juniper-like edge, it is a staple wild food across the far north.
