Coffee Cocktail

The Coffee Cocktail is a Victorian classic that, despite its name, contains no coffee at all — it is named entirely for its dark, coffee-brown look. It is a rich, shaken drink of port and cognac bound together with a whole egg and a little sugar, strained up into a small glass and dusted with grated nutmeg. Silky and lightly foamed, it drinks like a boozy, spiced custard-in-a-glass rather than anything to do with the coffee bean.

Deep coffee-brown with a pale foamed cap, the Coffee Cocktail smells of sweet vinous port and warm grape brandy over a rich, eggy custard, all lifted by the sweet warm spice of freshly grated nutmeg. On the palate it is soft, silky and medium-sweet — dried-fruit and raisiny port depth, a backbone of cognac warmth, and the round, faintly savoury body the whole egg brings, finishing on nutmeg and vinous sweetness at around 18 percent alcohol in the glass. It drinks like a boozy, spiced custard, a nightcap rather than a refresher, and never tastes of coffee despite its name.
