Chocolate milk

Chocolate milk is sweetened, cocoa-flavoured milk: dairy (or, increasingly, a plant milk) blended with cocoa powder or chocolate syrup and sugar until smooth and opaque brown. Served cold over the day or warm as a comfort drink, it is one of the most familiar children's beverages in the world and a fixture of school cafeterias, lunch boxes and diners. Because the cocoa is suspended rather than dissolved, the drink needs sweetening and often a thickener to stay creamy and keep the powder from settling. In its dairy form it carries milk's protein, calcium and fat alongside the chocolate flavour, which has made it a popular post-exercise recovery drink as well as a treat.

A cold glass of chocolate milk reads first as roasted cocoa over a soft, milky-creamy body, sweet and lightly bitter at once, with a faint vanilla rounding and a smooth, slightly thickened mouthfeel from the milk fat and suspended cocoa solids; whole-milk versions taste richer and rounder than skim.
