The datil is a small, fiercely hot chilli of the species Capsicum chinense — a genetic sibling of the habanero — that ripens to a glowing golden yellow-orange and pairs habanero-level heat with an unusually sweet, fruity flavour. It is the regional signature pepper of St. Augustine, Florida, inseparable from the Minorcan-American community that has grown it there for generations.
