The Chantenay carrot is the short, stout workhorse of the carrot family: a thick, broad-shouldered, conical root that tapers from a wide crown to a blunt rounded tip, rarely much longer than a hand. Deep orange through to a richly coloured, dense sweet core, it is squat and heavy for its length, with firm flesh and a concentrated, full carrot flavour that has long made it the prized type for canning, freezing and juicing.
