Cappuccino

Cappuccino is an Italian espresso drink in which a single shot of espresso is topped with steamed milk and a thick cap of milk foam, traditionally in roughly equal thirds of espresso, hot milk and froth. The foam insulates and softens the coffee, so the drink reads as a warm, creamy, gently sweet cup with the espresso's bitterness rounded off, served in a small cup of about one hundred and fifty to one hundred and eighty millilitres and often finished with a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon.

A cappuccino smells and tastes first of warm steamed milk and soft, sweet froth, with the espresso reading through as a mellow roasted-coffee, caramel and cocoa note rather than the sharp bitterness of the bare shot; the lactose and milk fat lend a gentle sweetness and a light, pillowy, creamy body topped by a thick foam, far milder and rounder than espresso while still clearly coffee.
